MINNEAPOLIS – Honeywell (NYSE: HON) today announced it has selected 40 middle school teachers to receive scholarships to attend the third annual Green Boot Camp, a five-day, interactive workshop focused on best-practice instruction methods for teaching energy, sustainability and environmental concepts.
The workshop will take place July 18-22 at Union County Vocational-Technical Schools (UCVTS) in Scotch Plains, N.J. It is sponsored by Honeywell, and was created as part of a “green partnership” between the company and UCVTS.

“Green Boot Camp is an extension of our decades-long commitment to science and math education, and is a great partnership with some of our country’s best teachers,” said Paul Orzeske, president of Honeywell Building Solutions. “From our iconic thermostats to turbocharged engines, more than 50 percent of Honeywell’s products and services help drive energy efficiency and reduce carbon emissions. We’re dedicated to sharing that expertise and enthusiasm with students who will lead their communities to a greener future.”

During the week, the 40 teachers will explore the roots of green technology, sustainable living and environmental awareness by using the Union County campus as a hands-on laboratory. Projects include designing and building a solar house and wind turbine, and mastering new approaches for delivering lessons to students. Developed by UCVTS teachers, the curriculum emphasizes interactive learning, and offers tangible tools and materials for teachers to use in the classroom. The topics covered range from renewable energy and greenhouse gas emissions to carbon foot printing and green jobs.

“The Green Boot Camp helps middle school teachers engage their students in a path of learning that can lead to rewarding, high-demand careers in the emerging green economy,” said Deborah Scanlon, Chairman of the Union County Board of Chosen Freeholders. “The Freeholder Board is proud to support our award-winning Vo-Tech Schools and Honeywell in the effort to nurture an interest in science and sustainability at a young age.”

“We’re excited to once again support and host this workshop,” said UCVTS Superintendent of Schools Dr. Thomas Bistocchi. “Through Green Boot Camp, teachers learn how to apply the curriculum in their classrooms, and give students the information to become environmental stewards for their schools, families and communities. It can be difficult for educators to keep up with the latest trends, technologies and research, especially in such a rapidly evolving field. That’s why programs like the boot camp are vital.”

Honeywell and UCVTS launched Green Boot Camp in 2009 for teachers in the Union County, N.J. area. The workshop now welcomes teachers from across North America; Honeywell received more than double the applications from last year, and the 2011 class includes attendees from 21 states and one Canadian province.
